The Walking Tour of Historic Downtown Galax was published as part of Galax's 2006 Centennial. Our goal in developing the Walking Tour is to celebrate and share in the rich heritage of Downtown Galax. In 2002, the Galax Downtown center was designated as the "Galax Commercial District. The district is listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places." The Walking Tour basically follows the footprint of the Historic District beginningat the Rex Theater and progressing along Grayson and Main Streets. The path is generally level and about 1/4 mile in length. We suggest casually walking our streets, enjoying the small town atmosphere, and learning about our historical town. Feel free to go inside the establishments to appreciate the historic features of the stores and enjoy a friendly welcome from the folks of Galax.
